Membership in the WCMS -
Is it worth it?
$200.

That's the price for your annual membership in the Wake County Medical Society. Is it worth it? Absolutely. It's worth belonging to the WCMS for the following five reasons:

1. Supporting your Wake County community and its healthcare needs.

The spirit of volunteerism is strong in Wake County. Hundreds of local physicians volunteer to help our indigent. The Society coordinates several programs that allow poor people access to volunteer doctors and to special case management services for children with diabetes, sickle cell anemia or asthma.

Wake County is a better place because of these important outreach programs:

Project Access:
Volunteer medical program providing care to economically disadvantaged uninsured men, women and children of Wake County;
Children’s Access:
Outreach program has enrolled 5500 children in the Wake County Medicaid Program
Community Care Case Management:
Asthma, diabetes, and sickle cell patient support
Early Childhood Development Program:
Identify and treat three and four year olds with developmental disabilities
CAP-C Program for Medically Fragile Children:
Enables 170 children to receive care at home rather than be institutionalized

A portion of your dues serves as one of the catalysts for all this good work to occur.

2. Advocating for the profession of medicine at our county level.

The Society leadership works with the thirteen member Wake County delegation to the N.C. General Assembly regarding issues of importance. The current pressing issue is the medical liability crisis.

Politics is local as well as statewide. We need to be involved with our legislators to cause change. Our focus is on the local legislators and we can use your support.

3. Socializing with your physician colleagues.

Many physicians feel too busy to do anything except work long hours caring for patients. But, "No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main," wrote John Donne about 400 years ago. The same idea holds true today with physicians and your local professional community.

The Society provides an opportunity for physicians to nourish relationships through social interaction with one another at our dinner meetings featuring prominent speakers and at other events.

4. The Wake County Physician Magazine

The Wake County Physician magazine, sponsored by the Society, is an important medium for discussion of physician interests and healthcare issues. Doctors, politicians, and lots of other folks read the magazine.

5. The right thing to do

Finally, physician membership in the WCMS is just the right thing to do. Physicians and ultimately our patients benefit from our membership and our leadership in local affairs.
